AUSPICIOUS OCCASION: The `Upanayan' ceremony under way at Gosaninuagaon Jagannath temple in Berhampur on Friday.
BERHAMPUR: The inhabitants of Gosaninuagaon area of the city and the management of the Jagannath temple in the area got together to conduct `Upanayan' rituals of Brahmin children from poor families from Orissa and Andhra Pradesh on Friday. It was a mass `Upanayan' ceremony at the Jagannath temple at Gosaninuagaon. Children from poor Brahmin families from Ichapuram, Berhampur and Jarada took part in this ceremony. According to managing head of the temple, Panchanan Choudhury, it is one of the philanthropic activities taken up by them from time to time. In recent past they have conducted similar mass Upanayan ceremonies that has benefited around 150 Brahmin families. Mr Choudhury said due to rising costs many poor Brahmin families in rural areas were unable to conduct the rituals of `Upanayan' for their children. When they approach the temple the temple authorities decide upon a date to conduct a mass upanayan ceremony for which the cost is totally borne by the temple and the inhabitants of Gosaninuagaon.
Decoration
The temple was decorated so that the children taking part in it did not feel that their upanayan ceremony was a low-key affair because they were poor. The temple also allowed two schools for children to run at the buildings on its campus for the benefit of general public.
