HYDERABAD: Notwithstanding the pipeline burst that saw water gush out and inundate several business establishments recently at Langer Houz, Krishna water will soon reach parts of the city and several surrounding municipalities hitherto served by Manjira and Singur, thanks to the Ring Main works nearing completion. The pipeline burst during the trial run of Ring Main I pipeline, which brings Krishna water from Sahebnagar to Lingampally. "We are checking the line all over again for water pressure and are working on an alternative plan for smoother flow," the HMWSSB managing director K.S. Jawahar Reddy said. Water had to be lifted from Mylardevulapalli to Lingampally at a height of 250 feet, necessitating pumping of water at heavy pressure.
Steady pace of work
Two Ring Mains were being built - brand new drinking water lines running along the periphery of the twin cities and bringing areas dependent so far on Manjira and Singur water into the Krishna ambit - and would be ready in two months. The Ring Mains are crucial for making the city's drinking water distribution network receive the additional volume of 90 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) from the Krishna second phase, which is being commissioned shortly. While the 44-km-long Ring Main I connecting Sahebnagar, Prashasan Nagar and Lingampally would ease the drinking water problem in Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Ameerpet and Alwal areas, the 24.36-km Sahebnagar-Marredpally Ring Main would augment water supply in Secunderabad and surrounding municipalities. Sahebnagar near Vanasthalipuram is the starting point for Krishna in the State Capital. "The effort is to improve the internal distribution before the full quantum of water can be drawn."
More reservoirs
To store the additional water, 14 reservoirs were being built along the Musi. Ring Main I laid at a cost of Rs. 118 crores would haul 45 MGD wherein 27 MGD would go to Prashashan Nagar, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Seri Lingampally Municipality, Kukatpally, Borabanda, Balanagar, Sanathnagar and Fatehnagar, 15 MGD to Chandrayangutta, Balapur, Shamshabad International Airport, Maisaram and Salala Barkas and 3 MGD to Rajendranagar Municipality. The Rs. 81-crore Ring Main II will bring 45 MGD to Malkajgiri (9 MGD), Kapra (8 MGD), and Uppal Municipalities (6.5 MGD), Secunderabad Cantonment area (8.5 MGD), Marredpally-Mettuguda-Lalaguda area (12 MGD) besides core Secunderabad (1 MGD). What more, the areas will also receive alternate day supplies once the Ring Mains are commissioned.
