VIJAYAWADA: Making the traffic junctions on the busy Karl Marx Road (Eluru Road) more convenient to road users by removing the encroachments on the roadside, installing signal lights wherever required and providing `free left' to vehicle users were some of the decisions taken by Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar and City Police Commissioner C.V. Anand during their joint inspection on Friday. It was also decided to move the bus bays located near traffic junctions to a nearby place and close the open drains at traffic junctions. When the two officials travelled on Karl Marx Road beginning at Chuttugunta centre, they found several encroachments on either side of the road. At Chuttugunta centre, they found that vehicle users were facing inconvenience due to absence of `free left' facility, and hence, a decision was taken to provide the same. On their way to Vijaya Talkies centre, they stopped at Deepti Travels centre on seeing a timber merchant occupying the road in front of his depot by placing the logs. Mr. Gulzar asked the town planning officials to remove all encroachments from the roadside.
Catches attention
Non-functioning signal lights at Vijaya Talkies centre caught the attention of the officials, who felt that such lights needed to be either replaced or repaired. The officials touched the points of intersection of Nakkal Road, Besant Road and Apsara Circle before the Police Control Room and jotted down a few points on the steps to be taken to streamline the vehicular traffic on Karl Marx Road. The two officials also inspected Kaleswara Rao Market, where the problem of parking of vehicles was acute. Even though Canal Road was allocated for parking, the officials observed that only a limited number of vehicles were parked there while many other vehicles were parked in front of the shops. Hence, it was decided to explore the possibility of relocating the parking lot to the other side of the road. Besides improving the traffic junction at Kaleswara Rao Market, it was also decided to implement the no-parking norm strictly in the zone.
Hoardings
Mr. Gulzar and Mr. Anand visited Hanumanpet, where they saw many private transport operators parking their buses and lorries on the road. Though loading and unloading of goods on roads was banned, the activity was continuing. The officials told the transport operators that stringent action would be initiated against the violators. During the tour, the officials found that hoardings in some areas were posing a threat to the public safety and decided to remove them immediately. RTC Regional Manager M. Seetapathi, ACP (Traffic) T. Prabhakar Babu, City Planner G. Venkataratnam, officials of the APSPDCL, BSNL and Road and Buildings Department accompanied both the Commissioners.
