NDMC notice to AIIMS

Institute `challaned' for failing to check mosquito breeding

NEW DELHI: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences registered the maximum number of dengue cases reported from any single organisation in the Capital last year. And this year, even before the beginning of the "dengue season", the Institute has been "challaned" for failing to prevent mosquito breeding on its premises. The Health Department of the New Delhi Municipal Council has issued notices to AIIMS and Lady Hardinge Medical College where mosquito breeding has been found.

Breeding pools

During a joint inspection by a team including staff members from NDMC and AIIMS this week, experts found breeding pools of aedes mosquito, responsible for dengue, in uncovered overhead tanks at AIIMS.

"Though we had written to all hospitals in the city to take special precautions against the outbreak of dengue, we have found mosquito breeding in two hospitals. Notices have been issued to both and we hope that the hospitals will now work towards preventing an outbreak," said NDMC Chief Medical Officer R. N. Singh.

Special cell

Meanwhile, AIIMS -- which reported 25 cases of dengue including the death of a medical student studying at the Institute last year -- has established a Disease Outbreak Response Cell (DORC) to prevent and manage outbreak of various diseases at its premises, especially dengue.

"The cell that has been set up in the Institute will organise public education activities to prevent mosquito breeding, apart from coordinating activities to ensure better patient care at AIIMS. This is a complete package that we have put together to prevent outbreak of the disease this year. Also, we are requesting our neighbouring areas to ensure that no breeding is found to prevent any cases of dengue this year," said DORC convenor Bir Singh.
