BANGALORE: The Hewlett Packard help desk was not responsible if an employee travelled by a vehicle other than the one allotted to her and did not come to the office, said Veeta T., help desk executive. Deposing before a Fast Track Sessions Court hearing BPO staffer Pratibha Murthy's murder trial on Monday, Ms. Veeta said the help desk dealt with those picked up in a vehicle. It does not check with the driver why someone was not picked up on a particular route, she said. It was difficult for the help desk to find out about those who were absent for a day. Some employees come for work in their own or their friend's vehicles. Employees come in different cabs too. "The department heads have the list of persons who are absent," she said. On December 13, 2005, Ms. Veeta called Pratibha on her mobile phone around 2 a.m. to confirm the pick-up by the vehicle on Route No. 131. It is a practice to confirm the movement of the vehicle from the first person to be picked up. Prathiba was the first to be picked up from Kumaraswamy Layout. Answering the call, Pratibha told Ms.Veeta that she was picked up by the vehicle going on Route No. 405. Ms. Veeta said she did not enquire about the reason that prompted her to go by a different vehicle.
