FINISHING TOUCHES: Sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman working on a statue of musician G. Devarajan at Paravur, near Kollam.

KOLLAM: A memorial to musician G. Devarajan, at his native Paravur, is getting final touches. A bronze statue is being sculpted by Kanayi Kunhiraman. It will be installed at Paravur Nehru Park where Devarajan was cremated. The installation ceremony will be on September 27, the birth anniversary of Devarajan.

The project has been initiated by the Devarajan Smaraka Samithy constituted by the Paravur Municipal Council. The statue will be four-and-a-half feet tall and will weigh 400 kg. It is expected to cost Rs.8 lakh. With Government sanction, the Paravur Municipal Council has made an allocation of Rs.6 lakh for the purpose and the Department of Culture has made an allocation of Rs.25,000. The remaining amount will be collected from the public.

As per the desire of Kunhiraman, close friends and relatives of Devarajan will inspect the statute and suggest alterations, if any. Poet O.N.V. Kurup was one of them.
