Detained under Goondas Act

Coimbatore: The City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan has ordered the detention of four persons under the Goondas Act for a period of one year.

The detentions were aimed at preventing incidents of crime and breach of public peace and tranquillity by anti-social and criminal elements with a criminal background involved in cases of house breaking, robbery and waylaying.

S. Prabhu alias Balakrishnan (27) of Vaniyar Street was arrested recently on charges of waylaying and attempting to rob Jayakanth on April 21 night at 10.30 p.m.

He was remanded to judicial custody and lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison.

Inquiries revealed that he was already in a case of assault in Variety Hall Road police.

Mr. Gandhirajan ordered his detention and the orders were served on him at the Central Prison.

The City Police also arrested Vijayakumar, Gnanaprakash and Ramesh on April 5 on charges of waylaying and robbing Karthik of Idayar Street on April 4 at Marakkadai bus stop besides unleashing terror among the public by whipping out a knife.

The trio were arrested and remanded to judicial custody and lodged at the Central Prison besides seizing the bike and knife used by them.

Subsequent investigations revealed that they were involved in various cases of waylaying and house breaking in R.S. Puram, Race Course, Singanallur, Ramanathapuram, Variety Hall Road, Sai Baba Colony, Thudialur and Vadavalli.

Hence, the decision to detain them under Goondas Act and orders were served on them at the Central Prison.
