NEW DELHI: Tanvi Shah scored a thrilling 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(8) victory over Beatrice Gumulya in the second singles to help India beat the sixth-seeded Indonesia 2-1 in a play-off match of the Asia-Oceania Junior Fed Cup under-16 girls tennis tournament at the National Tennis Centre, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday. The seventh-seeded India will next meet the fifth-seeded China in the play-off for the fifth place on the morrow. Meanwhile in the semifinals, top-seeded Australia defeated third-seeded Uzbekistan 2-1, while fourth-seeded Thailand ousted the second-seeded Japan 2-1.
The results: Semifinals: Australia bt Uzbekistan 2-1 (Sally Peers lost to Aleksandra Kolesnichenko 3-6, 1-6; Isabelle Holland bt Albina Khabibulina 6-3, 6-3; Isabelle/ Sally bt Albina/ Aleksandra 6-3, 6-4). Thailand bt Japan 2-1 (Nicha Lertpitaksinchai lost to Misaki Doi 4-6, 5-7; Noppawan Lertcheewakarn bt Kurumi Nara 4-6, 6-4, 6-2; Noppawan/ Nicha bt Kurumi/ Aki Yamasoto 6-3, 3-6, 6-4). Play-off: India bt Indonesia 2-1 (Kyra Shroff bt Karyn Emeralda 6-2, 6-2; Tanvi Shah bt Beatrice Gumulya 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(8); Kyra/ V. Archana lost to Karyn/ Grace Sari Ysidora 3-6, 2-6).
