Fresh notices to four MPs

Staff Reporter

Investigations into human trafficking racket resumes

NEW DELHI: With the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh over, the Delhi police have issued fresh notices to four members of Parliament asking them to join investigations into the alleged human trafficking racket that came to light with the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party MP Babubhai Katara here last month.

Ramswaroop Koli, a BJP MP from Bayana in Rajasthan, and three Bahujan Samaj Party MPs from U.P. — Mohammed Tahir Khan from Sultanpur, Mitrasen Yadav from Faizabad and Ashok Kumar Rawat from Misrikh — have been asked to appear before the police by May 14.

The four MPs were earlier served notices on April 23 seeking their co-operation in the investigations. Expressing their willingness to join the investigations, Mr. Khan and Mr. Rawat had then said that they were pre-occupied with the election process in U.P. and the office of Mr. Koli had intimated that the MP was in his hometown. Mr. Yadav is yet to respond to the earlier notice.

"Fresh notices were served after the election process was completed in U.P. on Friday and they have been asked to make themselves available for investigations by Monday," said a senior police officer.

The role of the four MPs had come under the scanner after one of the accused Sunder Lal Yadav told a local court here that he had introduced some travel agents to them at different points in time and was paid for it. So far six persons including Mr. Katara have been arrested by the Delhi police in this connection. Also, 25 passports belonging to different individuals have been recovered from Rajender Kumar Gampa, who along with his sister Kiran Dhar and Sunder Lal Yadav was arrested in the capital on April 21.

Mr. Katara was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here on April 18 while he was trying to take a woman and a minor boy to Toronto on the passports of his wife and son.
