THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Madura Ranganathan staved off Chirashanthi Rajur's stiff challenge 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to make progress in the qualifying rounds of the Kerala Open ITF women's tennis tournament at the TTC courts here on Saturday. In another match, Stephanie MacFarlane (Australia) crushed Pallavi Sharma 6-0, 6-1 to move into the second round.
Main draw
The main draw of the $ 25,000 tournament, sponsored by LIC, State Bank of Travancore and Kerala Tourism, is slated to start on Monday. Eight qualifiers will join 20 direct entrants and four wild cards in the main draw. The results (Indians otherwise specified): First round qualifying: Shweta Gadigeeppa Kakhandki bt Bhavani Ravisankar 6-2, 6-0; Asha Sarvana Mohan bt Shivani Sreekantiah 6-2, 6-4; Stephanie MaCfarlane (Aus) bt Pallavi Sharma 6-0, 6-1. Easy win for Palakkad
Palakkad crushed Pathanamthitta 3-0 in the Western Union State inter-district football championship at Palakkad on Saturday. Abdul Hakkim (fourth), Abdul Noushad (seventh) and Faizal Rahman (27th) did the scoring.
