Chanu, Kolte score wins

NEW DELHI: Indian boxers put themselves in line for five medals with light-flyweight boxers, Mandakini Chanu and Sanjay Kolte, scoring impressive wins in the quarterfinals of the Ahmet Comert Cup international boxing tournament in Istanbul, Turkey.

Mandakini defeated Y, Mariyam of Kazakhstan 16-6 in the 48kg quarterfinal. According to the information received here from Istanbul, in the 70kg class, Aswathy Mol punched her way past Elena Koltsova of Kazakhstan as the referee stopped contest, in the second round. Renu (75kg) also reached the semifinals with a 17-3 beating of Claudia Schindler of Switzerland.

Two other pugilists in the fray, Lata Rani and Aswathy Prabha lost out. Lata lost to Russia's Victoria 11-19 and Aswathy Prabha was outclassed 2-17 by Turkey's Nagehan Gul.

In the men's section, Kolte scored a hard-fought win against a better-rated Sadigh Farajzadeh of Iran. Diwakar Prasad (57kg) also moved into the medal round beating Hodosi Zsolt of Hungary. The other Indian in the fray, H. K. Beliwal (51kg), lost of Turkey's Kadri Kodel 9-11 in a close contest.
