MYSORE: A Tamin deer (Cervus Eldi), which is listed as an endangered species, gave birth at Mysore Zoo recently. The mother and the young one are reported to be in good health. The zoo has over a dozen Tamin deer, which are natives of southeastern Asia. The deer housed at the zoo are of Burmese strain. Some of them are also of Thai strain as the species are found on the Thai-Burmese border. According to sources from conservation groups, the Burmese strain of deer or Tamin are found in the Tanaosri Mountains along the Thai-Burmese border. The animal lives in herds on grasslands and in open forests with plenty of water sources. They eat fruits but not leaves.
Mating season
The animal mates between February and April. While it has no specific mating season when in captivity, it is generally noticed that the deer mates between November and June in such an environment. The mother gives birth to one calf at a time. Reports say the animal had been listed as endangered and is close to extinction because of hunting and the destruction of their habitat. Many breeding stations have been opened in the regions where the animal is found. The animal lives for 20 to 25 years.
