Allotment of dwellings to be computerised in Chandigarh

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The Adviser to Chandigarh Administrator, Lalit Sharma, launched new software -- Srishti (Slum Rehabilitation for Improvement, Security and Hygiene of the Inhabitants), developed by the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) - over the weekend to computerise the entire process of allotment of dwelling units under the Slum Rehabilitation Project.

He said the application-based workflow system had been successfully tested during the shifting of about 700 families from Madrasi Colony in Sector 26 to Sector 56. The system would also facilitate filtering of ineligible applicants. Mr. Sharma also released a brochure on the Slum Rehabilitation Project under the Chandigarh Small Flats Scheme-2006 which pointed out that 23,841 slum families spread over 18 different colonies had been identified.

He made it clear that these dwellings would not be allotted on ownership basis but on the basis of license fee to prevent "`resale''. And to ensure that only genuine allottees got the property rights, the option of ownership on payment of balance amount would be given to the beneficiary after 20 years.

Also, a smart card would be provided to each eligible family. It would also have details about the paid licence fee instalments and could be used as an identity document at the time of deposit of the balance instalments.
