Land row: Youth Congress poser to Mammootty

Special Correspondent

  • Rules out any attempt to tarnish his image
  • Says DYFI trying to communalise issue

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Youth Congress State president T. Siddique has asked cine actor Mammootty to clarify whether he or his relatives have encroached on land in Munnar.

Mr. Siddique told a news conference here on Saturday that Mammootty's silence amounted to admission that he was in possession of encroached land in the area. He also accused the DYFI of trying to communalise the issue with its attempts to defend Mammootty. The Youth Congress does not approve of the burning of Mammootty in effigy or other attempts to tarnish his image, but it regretted Mammootty's attempts to become the `brand ambassador' of the CPI(M), the Youth Congress leader said. He said the public resistance offered by CPI(M) MLA Rajendran and party activists in Munnar on Friday clearly proved who were the real encroachers in Munnar. Several constructions related to the party, including the Jinadevan Memorial and E.K. Nayanar Memorial, are coming up on encroached land.

The Government must take steps to demolish the MLA's house and the CPI(M) offices which, he said, have been constructed on encroached land. He alleged that the resort named Munnar Woods had been built using funds received as bribe in the SNC Lavalin deal. The resort is linked to a former Chief Engineer of the KSEB, who had played a major role in the revival of Pallivasal and Shenkulam projects.
