Large-scale rubber smuggling alleged

Thiruvananthapuram: Rubber sheets and latex were being smuggled in large quantities to Tamil Nadu, according to Thiruvananthapuram District Marketing and Processing Society president Sugunan. In a press release here on Saturday, Mr. Sugunan said that the Government was doing nothing to prevent the large-scale smuggling. He urged Finance Minister Thomas Isaac to do something about the situation. Mr. Sugunan said the number of unregistered rubber dealers was increasing. A section of these people were behind the large-scale smuggling. He said unregistered rubber dealers were procuring rubber without paying tax to the Government. The latex was then smuggled to Tamil Nadu and sold for a high profit. The Government was losing crores of rupees in terms of sales tax because of the activities of the smugglers.
