Bangalore: A separate directorate of nursing should be set up in the State, Minister for Women and Child Development H.K. Kumaraswamy said here on Saturday.

Speaking at a function to commemorate International Nurses Day organised by the Anglo-Indian Unity Centre and the Florence Nightingale Nurses Welfare Association, Mr. Kumaraswamy suggested that dedicated nurses should be recognised with the Rajyotsava Award.

The 8th Florence Nightingale Nurses Awards were presented to nurses from various medical institutions who have worked selflessly in their field.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said society should recognise the hard work of nurses and reward their dedication and sincerity in taking care of patients.

One of the award-winners, Arockhiya Mary, said, "I feel very happy and satisfied that I have fulfilled my father's wishes of being a good and dedicated nurse. Since I am in the field of Paediatric Surgery, I find immense pleasure while taking care of small children in my ward who are the future generation of this country. Many of them remember us and come to visit us often after their recovery and discharge." She has been working in St. John's Medical College Hospital for 14 years.

The other award-winners are Rejitha Andrews, Esther Daniel, T. Basappa, K. Maria, Vimalamma, N. Jayalakshmi and Anjali Ullas Rani.

Ivan Nigli, MLA and chairman of the Florence Nightingale Award Committee, was present.
