KHB seeks 400 acres of land

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) has sought 400 acres from the government land that has been recovered from the encroachers in and around Bangalore.

Disclosing this to presspersons here on Saturday, Housing Minister D.T. Jayakumar said the KHB intended to take up housing projects and schemes to form layouts on the land. The land had been sought in different areas of Bangalore.

He also said the Government intended to bring in legislation earmarking a particular percentage of sites for those from the lower strata of society even in private layouts. — Special Correspondent

Parishat urged to organise seminar

BANGALORE: The Kasaragod Zilla Kannada Jagrithi Samiti has urged Kannada Sahitya Parishat to organise a national seminar on the Mahajan Commission's recommendations on the Kerala-Karnataka border dispute during the 74th Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan to be held in Udupi in October.

Samiti president Shivarama Kasaragod said in a press release that the seminar should demand the fair and speedy implementation of the Commission's recommendations on the issue.

The seminar should discuss various aspects of the recommendations, as it would also help people launch a movement. The Parishat should invite eminent speakers, writers and others for the seminar, he said. — Staff Reporter

Poets' meet on June 9

Bangalore: The Kasaragod-based Karavali Samskrithika Pratishtana has organised a multilingual poets' meet on June 9 at Kasaragod on the occasion of Kayyara Kinhanna Rai's 93rd birthday, according to a press release.

The Pratishtana has invited applications from poets and writers for the Kayyara Kinhanna Rai Poetry Award and the Rashtrakavi Manjeshwara Govinda Pai Sahitya Award. Cabin crew training

BANGALORE: The Department of Backward Classes Welfare has invited applications from backward class candidates for training as cabin crew and in hospitality management. Only those who have passed the pre-university course and are aged below 24 can apply. Application forms can be obtained from backward classes welfare offices and submitted by June 11. Plea against licensing new liquor shops

Udupi: The Federation of Wine Merchants Associations of Karnataka has urged the Government not to issue new licences under Forms CL2 and CL9.

Association general secretary B. Govindaraj Hegde told presspersons here on Saturday that the number of people covered by each shop was 6,905, whereas the population covered by one shop was 9,807 in Andhra Pradesh, 8,855 in Tamil Nadu and 35,575 in Kerala. Granting of new licences would affect the business of existing shops.

Since the Government had doubled the licence fee, it had become difficult for licence holders to remit it in one payment. The fee should be accepted in instalments, he said.

DYFI demand

HASSAN: President of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, Karnataka State Committee, Sunil Kumar Bajal has demanded the suspension of Hassan town sub-inspector Yogish for assaulting students in KSRTC Bus Stand on May 2 when they were peacefully agitating for getting their bus passes. He charged the official with caning the students without any provocation. He said false cases had been booked against 19 student leaders (who were the members of SFI and DYFI). These cases should be withdrawn, he said.

Bidar: Students of Karnataka Veterinary University chose to organise their strike in an innovative way. On the fourth day of the strike, the boys and girls cleaned their campus. Dressed in white aprons, they removed weeds on the campus, collected garbage, swept the ground and collected and burnt fallen leaves. Over 300 students participated in the strike on Saturday. — Staff Correspondent

Seized

Raichur: A special squad of the Excise Department has arrested three persons and seized 610 litre of spurious liquor and 300 gm of chloral hydrate powder from them while they were allegedly carrying on the Dadar-Chennai Express at the Raichur railway station on Friday. The names of he arrested has been given as Venkoba, Ravikumar and Mahesh. They have been remanded in judicial custody. — Staff Correspondent

Sugar mill reopens

BIDAR: The Naranja Sahakari Sakkare Kharkhane reopened on Saturday after talks with the district administration succeeded. Factory chairman Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli had stopped crushing operations on Friday accusing the Government of harassing his factory employees. He had alleged that the police had booked cases against factory officials following suicide by a farmer. — Staff Correspondent

Man run over by bus

MYSORE: A two-wheeler rider was killed on the spot when a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus ran over him at Rajiv Nagar II Stage on Friday. According to the police, the bus ran over Satish (24), a construction worker from Kumbarakopplu, when he was on his way to Rajiv Nagar. — Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: A six-year-old girl was knocked down by a truck while she was crossing a road on Friday. Jyothi, a resident of Janata Nagar Colony, was knocked down by a truck proceeding from H.D. Kote to Mysore, the police said. — Staff Correspondent

Layout to be named after Kumaraswamy

Belgaum: The Belgaum Urban Development Authority has decided to name a layout in the city after Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy as an expression of gratitude for the latter's concern towards development of the border district. According to official sources here on Saturday, board of members of the authority adopted a unanimous resolution moved Abhay Kumar Patil, MLA, to name Scheme No. 56 off Bauxite Road in the city after Mr. Kumaraswamy. Water supply affected

HUBLI: In the wake of the damage caused to the main water supply pipeline by workers of a private mobile service provider, water supply in several areas in Hubli will be delayed by a day. Areas in wards 30, 31, 32, 46, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53 (partial), 54, 66 and 67 will get water on Monday in stead of Sunday, Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board has said in a press release. — Staff Correspondent
