HYDERABAD: A plan is being worked out by the State Government to develop only integrated hostels hereafter, comprising students from all castes. The Government is of the view that co-existence of all castes is the only way to usher in an integrated society. Social Welfare Minister Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose told reporters on Saturday that 174 such hostels would be sanctioned this month in addition to 120 already announced by the Chief Minister, to ensure one in each Assembly constituency. Out of the 120 hostels sanctioned, 66 will be run by the Social Welfare Department, 40 by Backward Classes Welfare Department and 14 Tribal Welfare Department. Intake of each hostel, however, will be 400 students.
Reservation
In the integrated hostels run by the Social Welfare Department, 70 per cent of the seats will be reserved for Scheduled Castes, 12 per cent for converted Christians of SC origin, 9 per cent for backward classes, 5 per cent for Scheduled Tribes and 4 per cent for upper castes. Similarly, in the hostels of the BC and ST departments, 70 per cent of the seats will be filled by the respective sections and the rest left for others in the same pattern.
HUDCO loans
The Minister said these hostels would be constructed at a cost of Rs 1.68 crores each with HUDCO loans on vacant land in Zilla Parishad high schools.
