36 killed in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar dust storms

TAKING ITS TOLL: A tree lies uprooted in Patna on Saturday after last night's squall.

Lucknow: At least 31 people were killed and several others injured due to large scale destruction caused by a dust storm which lashed Sultanpur, Pratapgarh and Barabanki districts last night.

Six people were killed as a tree fell on their house in Musafirkhana township in Sultanpur, police sources said on Saturday adding that in a similar incident three more were killed in Lamhua area.

In half a dozen similar incidents in different parts of the district, about 15 people were killed, they added.

District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar said there were also reports of fire in some parts which razed about 100 huts and houses.

A team of officials has been set up to evaluate the extent of damage due to the dust storm, Kumar added.

A report from Barabanki said that four people were killed in different areas of Deva, Haidergarh and Fatehpur police station areas.

In Pratapgarh, three members of a family were killed when the walls of their house collapsed in Dharampura village, the sources added.

Several electricity poles and trees were also uprooted throwing normal life out of gear.

Lightning claims five lives

Darbhanga: Hailstorm and lightning that struck across Bihar late last night claimed five lives in this district.

Deputy superintendent of police Parvez Akhtar said that the lightning strike killed Savitri Devi of Panta village, Makshudan Yadav, Lal Babu Yadav and Kishori Yadav of Baruwara village and Ram Lakhan Shani of Lohara village in the district. --
