UNITED EFFORT: Villagers picketing the highway in Dindigul on Saturday. PHOTO: G. KARTHIKEYAN.
DINDIGUL : More than 200 persons at Thamaraipadi and several neighbouring villages picketed the Dindigul-Tiruchi main road, urging the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Dindigul Division) to halt all mofussil buses at the Thamaraipadi bus stand. Traffic was disrupted for more than an hour on the national highway. Local people alleged that no mofussil bus was stopping at the Thamaraipadi bus stand even during the rush hours. More than 500 persons had been coming to Dindigul from Thamaraipadi and surrounding villages for work every day. With inadequate town bus service, mofussil buses were the only source of transport for them, they said. People, mostly labourers, at Kammalapatti, Tannasiparaipatti, Thambinaickenpatti, Paraipatti, Kulathupatti, Athumarathupatti, Kovil Yagappanpatti, Karayanpatti and Pudhupatti have to board buses at the Thamaraipadi bus stand only. Despite repeated requests and appeals, the corporation did not operate more town buses, they said. They had picketed a few months ago to draw the attention of authorities. The police had convened a special meeting, attended by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural), TNSTC Regional Manager and political leaders, and they assured that buses would halt there during rush hours. But nothing had materialised so far, they added.
