HYDERABAD: The poor performance of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections underscores the need for a Third Front that can serve as an alternative, Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu said here on Saturday. Reacting to the results of the UP election, Mr. Naidu said the performance of different political parties needed to be put in proper perspective. While the Bahujan Samaj Party had obviously done very well, it was not as if the Samajwadi Party had fared badly. What was relevant politically was the miserable failure of the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party, he said adding that this was exactly why a Third Front was needed.
Special train
He was speaking to presspersons on Saturday afternoon after flagging off the special train to New Delhi carrying party leaders, cadres and farmers from six Telangana districts that were directly affected by the Babli Barrage and 11 more coming upstream on the Godavari in Maharashtra.
Main issue
Mr. Naidu said that more than the use of the term `Third Front', it would be appropriate to say that there was a need for an `alternative economic policy'. "This is what we will be working on, from now onwards", he said, adding he would surely be talking to leaders of like-minded parties and firm up things on this front.
