HYDERABAD: Opposition leaders at a farmers' meet here on Saturday termed the Congress Government in the State as anti-farmer and that it was touting itself as `farmer-friendly'. Addressing the meet organised by Bharateeyam, a relatively-new organisation working for the cause of farmers in the State, Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu pointed out that in the past three years of Congress rule, 4,081 farmers had committed suicide. "What has the Congress done to stem suicides? Poor farmers continue to suffer from skyrocketing input costs and poor minimum support prices and the vagaries of nature. What has the Government done to improve their lot?", he asked. Going on to dwell on food security, he said that against a demand of about 370 million tonnes of foodgrains, the nation was only able to produce about 250 to 260 million tonnes in the past few years. The need of the hour, Mr. Naidu said, was to improve foodgrain production significantly and in as little a span of time as possible and urged all concerned to come together and chalk out an action plan to this end. BJP State president Bandaru Dattatreya alleged that in the name of `Jalayagnam', the Congress leaders are indulging in corrupt practices. Earlier, Bharateeyam's Advisor V. Gopalakrishna Prasad and president G. Satyavani spoke.
