Nightingale birth anniversary celebrated

Capping ceremony of new nursing students conducted

BERHAMPUR: One hundred and eighty seventh birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale was celebrated at the school of nursing at MKCG Medical College premises in the city on Saturday.

It also marked the beginning of International Nurses' Week celebration at the institution. The news students of the institution took the oath of service before the portrait of Florence Nightingale. The `capping' ceremony for these students was also held which marks their formal introduction into the nursing profession. The principal of the MKCG Medical College Suraraj Patnaik, MLA R.C.C.Patnaik, additional director of nursing Premalata Dei and superintendent of the medical college B.K.Bastia were among the guests at the function.

A statue of Florence Nightingale was unveiled in front of the school of nursing. The weeklong celebrations would continue at the institution till May 18. It would involve seminars and debates on role of nurses in present world. To increase students' participation competitions would be held among students to assess their skills in quizzing, painting, rangoli, personality and talent shows, said principal tutor of the institution S.Dakua.

The nursing institution has intake strength of 50 students for its three-year course.

The student nurses' association of the institution is organising the celebration.
