CHENNAI:
Mayor M. Subramanian announced on Saturday that a Varummun Kappom (preventive health) camp would be held in north and south Chennai every week.
Inaugurating a medical camp at West Saidapet, the Mayor said 32,000 people were screened at nine preventive health camps organised by the Chennai Corporation till now.
The camps helped to diagnose 560 cases of diabetes, 52 of cervical cancer, 1,800 cataract and 410 hypertension cases. Treatment was offered to these patients.
Chennai Corporation Health Officer P. Kuganantham said, "People from the low income groups are greatly benefited by these camps." About 1,600 persons availed themselves of free medical screening at the camp held at West Saidapet and 1,350 persons were screened at a camp in Pulianthope the same day.
In West Saidapet, a team of 48 doctors and 120 health employees attended to the patients. Ten cases of tuberculosis and 96 cases of cataract were diagnosed. In Pulianthope, three women tested positive for cervical cancer.
