TAMBARAM: A minor fire that broke out in the Nanmangalam forest area near Tambaram on Velachery Main Road on Saturday evening scorched shrubs and plants. Eucalyptus trees dotting the forest were not affected.

Five acres engulfed

The fire, which broke out around 2.30 p.m., within minutes engulfed a swathe of five acres.

Two fire tenders that rushed from Tambaram put it out in half an hour.

Suspected cause

Firemen and officials of the Forest Department suspect that the fire, which erupted near the fence surrounding the forest area adjacent to the main road, could have been caused by the burning of waste.

A couple of tyres were found burnt at the spot, they said.
