HYDERABAD: Director-General of Foreign Trade B. S. Meena on Saturday assured pharmaceutical manufacturers that the Government was taking steps to contain fall in export revenue owing to strengthening of rupee against US dollar. Addressing Pharmexcil (Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry), Mr. Meena said the Ministry of Commerce had already taken up the issue, a `short-term problem,' with the Ministry of Finance. Stating that counterfeit drugs from the country were invading foreign markets, Drug Controller-General of India (DCGI) M. Venkateswarlu said 50,000 samples of different drugs would be tested in six months. The manufacturers could, instead, test the samples collected from the markets and certify their genuineness or send them to the DCGI for testing. Director-General of Drug Control of Andhra Pradesh R.P. Meena warned the manufacturers of stringent action if they indulged in making spurious drugs, a problem that was rampant in the State.
Concessions
Referring to the concession regime in States like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for establishing pharma industries, Mr. Meena said it was working against drug manufacturers in Andhra Pradesh. Some of them were making drugs here and labelling them in the States where concessions were offered. This was causing financial loss to the State Government. He urged the Centre to extend the same concessions to interior parts of Andhra Pradesh.
