Nurse throws acid on pharmacist

BANGALORE: A staff nurse at Manipal Hospital allegedly poured acid on her colleague, with whom she reportedly had an affair, as he refused to marry her.

The incident that took place at Manipal Hospital on Airport Road on the night of May 4 came to light only now.

Ramanathan (29), who suffered severe burns, is a pharmacist at the hospital. The nurse Helen Selvi (27) too suffered burns when the acid spilled on her too. Both have been hospitalised and are out of danger, the police said.

The Airport police, who registered a case against Helen, said they had not arrested her as she was still in hospital.

Helen and Ramanathan, both from Tamil Nadu, were in love for two years, but when she asked him to marry her, he refused. When she started pestering him, Ramanathan took a transfer to Manipal Hospital's unit in Jayanagar to avoid her, Airport inspector N.M. Iter told The Hindu on Saturday.

A few days before the attack, Ramanathan's relative, injured in a road accident in Tamil Nadu, was admitted to the intensive care unit of Manipal Hospital on Airport Road.

On the night of May 4, Helen came to the visitors' gallery on the third floor where Ramanathan, his cousin and the attendants of other patients were sleeping.

When the guard woke up Ramanathan, Helen allegedly poured acid on his head from a two-litre can. Even as Ramanathan tried to resist, acid splashed on Helen as well as Ramanathan's cousin and two other attendants.
