Thiruvananthapuram: It was business as usual at the City Corporation headquarters on Saturday. A majority of the employees turned up for work, giving up their second Saturday holiday in response to a call by the Kerala Municipal and Corporation Staff Union (KMCSU). All the sections in the office, including the citizen service centre on the ground floor, remained open throughout the day and functioned normally. The office also witnessed a steady stream of citizens seeking various services from the local body. The union had issued the call as part of a campaign organised in connection with its 40th State conference beginning here on May 25. A press release issued by the union here on Saturday said the call to work had evoked a good response from the employees. The Nedumangad, Neyyattinkara, Attingal and Varkala municipal offices also functioned normally, it said. Municipal chairmen and members were present. Corporation Secretary T.K. Ravindran said 80 to 85 per cent of the employees in the main office had reported for duty. "We received more than 500 applications at the Janasevana Kendram today, signifying that the initiative has gone down well with the public also," he said. Mayor C. Jayan Babu, Deputy Mayor V. Jayaprakash, chairmen of standing committees and councillors turned up at the office. The former Mayor V. Sivankutty, MLA, was one of the prominent visitors. Expressing satisfaction over the response of the employees, KMCSU general secretary K. Jayadevan said the union would initiate more such programmes to improve the quality of municipal service and instil confidence in the public.
