Car gutted, 5 persons burnt to death

VILLUPURAM: In a macabre accident, a Maruti car was totally gutted and all the five occupants, including the driver, were killed at Sathanur, 10 km from Ulundurpet, on Sunday.

The car (TN 22 AT 9592) was on its way to Chennai from Tiruchi when it collided head on with a lorry. In the impact, the car immediately caught fire and was totally destroyed in the blaze. The occupants were charred beyond recognition. On information, the police, along with fire service and rescue personnel rushed there. After extinguishing the flames, they could find only the skeletons inside the car. The lorry driver fled the scene. — Special Correspondent

4 killed in separate accidents

TIRUCHI: Four persons were killed in road accidents in two different places in the district on Sunday.

Police said three persons were travelling on a motorcycle on the Viralimalai - Manapparai road when a lorry hit their two-wheeler at South Andiapatti in Manapparai police station limits.

While, Chandrasekaran (23) and Jayachandran (25) died on the spot, another person sustained injuries.

The lorry was on its way to Karur from Pudukottai. The lorry driver was arrested.

In another accident, Jose (27), a trainee engineer in a private company at Tuticorin, and Balamurugan (30) were killed on the spot when a government bus dashed against their two-wheeler on the Tiruchi - Madurai National Highway on Thetthur branch road.

Convict rearrested after 11 years

VELLORE: A convict in a murder case, who was released from the central prison here on parole in 1996 and had been absconding since then, was rearrested by the Baradarami police on Saturday.

According to the police, after his release on parole, Palani, already married, had gone to Kerala and married another woman. When he came to Kallappadi village to see his first wife and daughter on Saturday, he was arrested by the police and produced before the judicial magistrate, Gudiyatham, who remanded him to judicial custody. — Special Correspondent

B.Tech entrance test results on website

COIMBATORE: The results of the Amrita Entrance Examinations for admission to B.Tech courses in the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University have been published.

The results are available at the university's website www.amrita.edu.

Among the 2,000 students who had appeared for the examination, C. Kanmani of Tiruchi, Madakasira Manjunath of Hyderabad and P.M. Prashanth of Chennai have secured the first, second and third ranks, according to a release from the university.

The counselling for admission to the colleges of engineering at Kollam, Bangalore and Coimbatore will start on May 25. Candidates have the option of appearing at any of the three campuses, as the counselling will be done through the satellite link simultaneously.

They can also view the counselling schedule at the university's website.

Grievances day

ERODE: The Superintending Engineer, Erode Electricity Distribution Circle, TNEB, Erode, said in a press release on Sunday that the grievances day for the Erode South Division Electricity consumers would be conducted at 10.30 a.m. on May 15 at the office of the Executive Engineer, 17, Gandhiji Road, Erode.

Darshan tickets

SALEM: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) opened an e-darshan advance booking centre on Meyyanur Road here on Sunday to help devotees book their tickets online for darshan and various sevas in the temple of Lord Venkateswara.

Devasthanam's Joint Executive Officer N. Srikanth inaugurated the centre.

According to Devasthanam officials, devotees can book tickets for darshan, Archana Ananthara Darshan and Nijapatha Darshan (allowed only on Friday) in the centre.

The devotees should come in person to register the impression of index finger while booking tickets. The centre will function from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays

except Tuesdays.

On Saturdays and Sundays, the centre will function up to 7 p.m.

Two held in assault case

TIRUNELVELI: The Palayamkottai police have arrested two rowdies for attacking a trader with sickle. The police said Murugan (32) and his younger brother Lakshmanan (28) attacked wholesale fruit trader Durai of Kailasapuram near Tirunelveli Junction on Saturday when the latter refused to give money to the anti-social elements. Based on a complaint from the victim, the police arrested them on Sunday.

Seawater enters hamlets

Nagercoil: Four houses were damaged and many trees were uprooted as the seawater entered the coastal villages at Thengapattinam on Sunday. According to sources, rough weather caused seawater to enter the houses of four fishermen. The affected were shifted to safer places.

Commits suicide

Nagercoil: A coolie committed suicide by consuming poison on Sunday. According to the police, Shankar (22) of Thengamputhur near Suchindrum took this extreme step as his wife Raja Retinam scolded him.

The police have registered a case and are investigating.
