Nadal is the master at Rome

ROME : Rafael Nadal racked up his third Rome Masters title in a row when he cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over sixth seed Fernando Gonzalez on Sunday.

The World No. 2 had few problems beating Chilean Gonzalez, who struggled to get back into the final after making an error-riddled start.

The win gave Nadal his 13th consecutive clay court title and extended his winning streak on the surface to 77 matches.

The Spaniard also equalled Thomas Muster's professional-era record of three Rome victories, though the Austrian won his over a period of seven years, in 1990, 1995 and 1996.

``It's incredible. To win here for a third time is a dream,'' Nadal said at the courtside, before admitting the match had been easier than he expected.

``Fernando made far more mistakes than usual and I took advantage of that.''

Ana Ivanovic wins

Former junior Wimbledon finalist Ana Ivanovic lifted the German Open title in Berlin on Sunday with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) win over Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The 19-year-old Serbian, ranked 16 in the world, picked up the $181,980 winners' cheque after seeing off her 21-year-old Russian opponent despite enduring a torrid opening set and suffering an ankle injury in the second.

Tame end

The third-seeded Indo-Czech duo of Leander Paes and Martin Damm lost their semifinal 3-6, 4-6 to the sixth-seeded Fabrice Santoro and Ninad Zimonjic.

The French-Serbian pair of Santoro and Zimonjic needed 59 minutes to pack off Paes and Damm. Paes and Damm were let down by their serve and were broken four times. Their failure to convert the break point opportunities also proved costly.

The results: At Berlin (WTA German Open): Final: Ana Ivanovic bt Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4). Semifinals: Svetlana Kuznetsova bt Justine Henin 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

At Rome (ATP Rome Masters): Singles: Final: Rafael Nadal bt Fernando Gonzalez 6-2, 6-2. Semifinals: Rafael Nadal bt Nikolay Davydenko 7-6(3), 6-7(8), 6-4.

Doubles: Semifinals: Fabrice Santoro & Nenad Zimonjic bt Leander Paes & Martin Damm 6-3, 6-4.

At Prague (WTA Prague Open): Final: Akiko Morigami bt Marion Bartoli 6-1, 6-3.
