KARACHI: Lying in an uncomfortable thirteenth position, Kamal Roy and Aloke Sadhu produced a determined burst of speed and stamina in the second session to win the friendship pairs event, comfortably with a tally of 1049.85 points here on Sunday. The friendship pairs event, rechristened as the HBL International Pairs here, was gone through in two sessions on Sunday. There were 72 pairs from the Asia and Middle East regions in the fray and at the halfway stage, Indian pairs were lagging behind. Sireen Barakat and Marwan Ghanem of Jordan were leading the field at the end of the first session till Kamal Roy and Aloke Sadhu overtook them. The Jordanian pair eventually finished second and India's veterans Ashok Ruia and Archie Sequeira, who have rarely played as partners, also came from behind to clinch the third position. The three main events of these championships, the Zachariah Adamjee Trophy for open teams, the Vinodini Goenka Trophy for ladies teams and the Jordan Trophy for seniors gets under way from Monday. While the open event will consist of 12 rounds of 20-board matches, the ladies and the seniors will play nine rounds of 20-board matches. The finals in all three events will be a 100-board affair and will be played on May 19 and 20.
