KOLKATA: Records fell in a heap on the final day of the XIIIth Federation Cup athletics as two National records and four meets records were sunk here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday. The first record fell early in the day when Preeja Sreedharan of Kerala eclipsed her own National 10,000m run record set barely five months ago in Doha Asian Games. Despite the race being scheduled early in the morning, Preeja had to brave a high percentage of humidity before clocking 33.19.71 that overhauled her own record of 33:48.35 seconds for the fourth time in a span of one year. Preeja's effort highlighted the improvement that India's Belarusian coach for middle and long distance runners, Dr. Snesarev Nikolay, has been recommending. Kavita Raut (Maharashtra), who clocked 34:56.51, bettered the championship record of Sunita Rani (35:05.18 seconds) set in 2000, to win the silver. Pampa Chanda (Bengal) finished third with 36:03.25 seconds. Similarly, in the men's section Surender Singh of Army added another meet record to his previous gold winning performance in the 5,000m, winning the 10,000m. He clocked 28:57.90 seconds which was the third all-time best timing by an Indian to overhaul Gulab Chand's nine-year-old record of 29:40.70. Santosh Kumar Patel (29:19.37) of Jharkhand and Sadashivam Raghunath (29: 28.52) of Tamil Nadu also put up creditable efforts and bettered the meet recordRanjith Maheshwary of Kerala set a meet record in the triple jump while host's Hari Shankar Roy bettered his own meet record in high jump with a mark of 2.21m. C. Hamza of Army created the last record of the day winning the men's 1,500m run. Preeja and Abraham became the best female and male athletes of the meet.
