Marches to mark 1857 anniversary

NEW DELHI: The All-India Students Federation and the All-India Youth Federation took out marches to mark the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence. The "jatha" that started from West Bengal on April 29 traversed through Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and reached Delhi this past Friday. Another "jatha" began from Punjab on May 5 and passed through various districts of the State and Haryana before reaching Delhi. The marchers met several freedom fighters.

Function to observe War anniversary

NEW DELHI: A function was organised jointly by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) and Indian Friendship Societies, Clubs and Associations at 24 Ferozshah Road here this past week to mark the 62nd anniversary of the victory over fascism in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. Member of Parliament Bachi Singh Rawat inaugurated a photo exhibition on the theme "Russia Soul: Sketches to the Portrait". This was followed by a concert by Indian and Russian artistes. RCSC Deputy Director Sergey P. Vanyukov pointed out that the victory accelerated the process of national liberation movements in different parts of the world.

Film festival on gender issues

NEW DELHI: A four-day international film festival titled "Gender and Sexuality -- Identities and Spaces" was inaugurated at India Habitat Centre here over the weekend.

The festival will screen over 40 films including award winning ones from Berlin, Chicago, Toronto, Amsterdam and New York. These films will highlight some of the contentious issues associated with masculine and feminine spaces and their expression. The festival is organised by Public Service Broadcasting Trust in association with UNESCO and MacArthur Foundation

Honoured

NEW DELHI: Manmohan Singh, the founder and former president of JICA Alumni Association of India (JAAI), was honoured with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in the Capital this past week in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the furtherance of friendly relations between Japan and India.

The decoration, conferred on Dr. Singh by the Emperor of Japan, was presented by the Ambassador of Japan Yasukuni Enoki. Dr. Singh after completing his MBBS from King George's Medical College, Lucknow, received training in TB control for six months under a programme run by OTCA, a former organisation of JICA.
