KOCHI: The Kerala Self-Financing Engineering College Managements' Association has decided not to surrender any seats in its member institutions to the Government. The decision was taken at a general body meeting of the association on Sunday, said G.P.C. Nair, president of the association. He said admissions would be made on the basis of the marks obtained by the applicants in classes 10 and 12 as well as their scores in the entrance examination. This was to make sure that the admission process was not exploitative and was transparentr, he added. It decided to provide reservation for various categories of students as done by the State Government for students it admitted to self-financing courses last year. The fees would vary from college to college, depending on the facilities available, number of seats and branches, investments made, the staff and faculty strength and so on. The fees had been fixed between Rs.50,000 and Rs.75,000 based on a declaration by the then Education Minister in 2003 that the Government spent Rs. 74,000 on each engineering student. The amount had been taken as the benchmark by the private college managements, he added.
