Madurai violence: DGP admits dereliction of duty

S. Vijay Kumar

Says attack onDinakaranoffice should have been prevented

MADURAI: State Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee has admitted to dereliction of duty on the part of Madurai police in the incident pertaining to the attack on Dinakaran newspaper office on Wednesday last that left three persons dead.

"There has been a dereliction of duty and I have ordered an enquiry by a senior police officer. In fact, we have found fault with them (the police). With 45 police personnel deployed for bandobust, how could this happen. They should have prevented it (the attack)," Mr. Mukherjee told The Hindu here on Sunday.

Asked whether he was satisfied with the progress of investigation in the Dinakaran newspaper attack case, he said the case was already transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation. "I do not want to comment on that. But the basic thrust at this stage was arresting the accused for which they (the local police) acted quite swiftly. Except the prime suspect, other known suspects have been arrested."

The DGP said the allegation of the complaint lodged by Dinakaran management not being taken into consideration for the purpose of investigation was not true. "Their complaint was delayed and the bodies that had to be sent for post-mortem. Before that, inquest had to be conducted. They did not give the complaint till 7.30 p.m. Their complaint was received after the case was registered and it will be handed over to the CBI."

On whether the contents of the complaint preferred by the Dinakaran management was considered during investigation, he said within a day of registering the case, a decision was taken to transfer it to the CBI.

"So the major part of the investigation will be done by the CBI. Arrests were made on the basis of the First Information Report (FIR)," he said.
