TRIBUTE: Gangubai Hangal at the birth centenary of Shrimant Nanasaheb Nadgir in Kundagol on Saturday.

HUBLI: Music enthusiasts of Dharwad and surrounding areas witnessed a rare event at Kundagol on Saturday. They had the opportunity to enjoy the music rendered by the senior most Hindustani vocalist in the country.

The 95-year-old Gangubai Hangal mesmerised them with raag Jaijaivanti for about 20 minutes.

The occasion was the birth centenary celebrations of the late Shrimant Nanasaheb Nadgir, who was a great patron of music and learning.

Gangubai Hangal and many of the musicians in the country have an emotional attachment to the Nadgir Wade in Kundagol because of the encouragement for music and learning given by Nadgir who was fondly called Nanasaheb.

Before beginning her brief concert, Ganguai Hangal inaugurated the all-night music festival and recalled her association with the Nadgir Wade, which gave shelter to her "guru" Sawai Gandharva and several other great artistes.

Gangubai Hangal said that so much was Nanasaheb's love for music that there was one music programme or the other throughout the year at Nadgir Wade. The vocalist said: "If you thump the wall of Nadgir Wade you will hear music.

"That is why the wade is special to me. I love to sing here and that is why will not speak much."

Kundagol MLA Mallikarjun Akki hoped that the music programmes in the wade would continue forever. Sri Chidambar Murthy Swamiji of Agadi Ananda Vana hoped that the stream of music would flow forever in Kundagol.

Mallikarjun Sindagi said that it was Shrimant Nanasaheb Nadgir who introduced Sawai Gandharva to the country Later several musicians and artistes, including Arya Bhandankar, Aditya Mohite, Anita Hangal, Somanath Maradur, Shrikant Pathak, Ashok Nadgir, Raifq Khan, Shafiq Khan, Jayashri Patnekar and Madhav Gudi, paid a musical tribute to Nanasaheb Nadgir.
