Karunanidhi to hold talks with Manmohan

Special Correspondent

On interlinking of rivers

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will go to New Delhi this month to hold discussions with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the interlinking of rivers.

Announcing this in the Assembly on Monday, Mr. Karunanidhi reiterated that interlinking of rivers was the solution to inter-State river water disputes. During Dr. Singh's recent visit to Chennai, he (Mr. Karunanidhi) wanted him to indicate the date for laying the foundation for the project. Dr. Singh invited him to Delhi for discussions.

Pointing out that the State suffered from the lack of water and land, the Chief Minister urged the neighbouring States to make sacrifice of their water resources for the sake of national unity.

Participating in a discussion on the inter-State river water disputes, he explained how the State was struggling with the neighbouring States on the Cauvery, Palar and Mullaperiyar issues.

Earlier, PWD Minister Durai Murugan said Kerala sought monetary payment from Tamil Nadu for releasing Neyyar water for irrigation.

Reading out a letter by his Kerala counterpart N.K. Premachandran last month, he said Kerala was working on a draft agreement and it would send the document to Tamil Nadu.

The communication mentioned that the Kerala Assembly adopted a resolution in October to give water to Tamil Nadu from the Neyyar irrigation project after realising the value of water given. It also revealed Kerala's stand against the 1971 inter-State agreement.

New concept

Expressing surprise over Kerala's demand, Mr. Durai Murugan said it was a new concept to seek money for water.

He was replying to the demand made by Communist Party of India (Marxist) member John Joseph, who wanted the State to hold talks with Kerala on Neyyar water.
