Court guidelines against harassment

The 1997 Supreme Court judgment in the State of Rajasthan Vs. Visakha case is the only legal guideline against sexual harassment at the workplace.

*Unwanted physical contact, soliciting sexual favours, using vulgar language, showing obscene pictures and making sexual gestures are all classified as sexual harassment in the judgement.

*It says that all workplaces should have Complaints Committees that include counsellors.

*The Committees should function in a fair and time-bound manner, protecting the secrecy of proceedings.

*The Committees should publish annual reports about their activities.

*The names and contact information of Committee members should be put up on notice boards.
