Celebration with a difference

Staff Reporter

Fans of D.K. Shivakumar will distribute food to beggars to mark his birthday on Tuesday

Bangalore: Come the birthdays of Ministers, former Ministers and MLAs and it is just another reason for fan clubs to give undue publicity to their idols — they put up banners on major roads and traffic signals (even though they are a great nuisance to commuters) and organise programmes in their honour.

The Akhila Karnataka D.K. Shivakumar Abhimanigala Sangha is obviously doing the same for the former Minister, whose birthday is on Tuesday.

"We have decided to celebrate the occasion in a very simple and meaningful way as there is a drought situation in the State and farmers are committing suicide," said M.S. Angadi, president of the State unit of the association.

Well, we do not know whether this was gibe made at the present Government, but drought situation or not, the fans of Mr. Shivakumar want to make the day memorable for beggars at the Beggar's Colony in Bangalore city by feeding them on Tuesday. As many as 750 beggars will be given food by the fans of the former Minister in the morning.

Later in the day, they will celebrate the occasion at his house by distributing uniforms to 150 hearing impaired children.

Well, at least one should thank God that the fans are not organising the usual speech-making programme where innumerable politicians will come and sing empty praises of the political leader whose birthday it is.
