New talents make their mark in the tinsel town

New talents seem to be earning applause in Malayalam film industry. The young brigade includes directors, writers and technicians. Fresh faces were behind some of the big movies made in 2007. Cameraman Amal Neerad became director through `Big B.'

The Mamootty starrer could not stir the box office but won critical acclaim. Amal had the support of some of the best technicians from director Ram Gopal Varma's `Factory.' Moreover, youngsters handled the camera and script for the film. Unni wrote the dialogues while local lad Samir Tahir canned the shots.

`Chota Mumbai' was director Anwar Rasheed's second film after `Rajamanickyam.' Anwar was able to set box office records but seems to be stuck with super stars and big banners. But his counterpart Rosshan Anddrews took the road less travelled.

He had left a mark with his debut work, `Udayananu Tharam.' And he showed the courage to cast fresh faces. Rosshan got to translate a good script penned by Boby and Sanjay of `Ente Veedu Apuveinteyum' fame into celluloid. `Notebook' was the result of the combined effort made by the trio. The young writers broke conventions when they narrated the story of how three girls face an unprecedented situation in life.

Scenarist Kalavoor Ravikumar is also making his presence felt in the industry. A favourite of director Kamal, Ravikumar gave a big hit in `Nammal.' His `Manjupoloru Penkutti' was accepted by the critics but failed at the box office. After a long hiatus, the writer is back with Kamal's latest flick, `Goal.'

Prithviraj's `Khaki' will be the launch pad for Bipin Prabhakar, who had worked as associate director in several films.

Like Bipin, the industry has a list of new talents but they fail to get the support of producers and distributors. It is a long wait for these youngsters despite their talents.
