This Day That Age
British and Malayan representatives have opened talks in London to agree on outstanding points in a draft Constitution giving the Malayan Federation complete independence within the Commonwealth on August 31 next. The Malayan delegation is led by Tengku Abdul Rahman, the Federation's Chief Minister. The main outstanding issue in the talks is that of citizenship in an independent Malaya. The Tengku's delegation wants a single citizenship. But the draft Constitution, recommended by a commission headed by Lord Reid of Britain, has proposed that citizens of the Federation and of all other Commonwealth countries should have the common status of British Commonwealth citizens.
