dated May 16, 1957: Sethusamudram project

The Sethusamudram Canal, when completed, might be able to take in steamers with a draught of 26 feet, Mr. Raj Bahadur, Minister of State for Transport and Communications, told Mr. S.V. Ramaswamy in the Lok Sabha on May 15. An accurate estimate of the capital cost of the project and of the anticipated traffic, the gross revenue and the net financial return were still under preparation and a decision to go ahead with the project could only be taken after these were available. When the project matured, Mr. Raj Bahadur added, it would result in the saving of some 300 miles of journey between the east and west coast--Cochin and Madras.
