Their enthusiasm to be part of the `educated' mainstream has not withered a whit. It was evident all along as the 750-odd candidates who are keen to be part of the Continuing Education Programme appeared for the Fourth Standard Equivalent Examination conducted by the District Literacy Mission under the Equivalency Model Project recently. And, surprisingly, many candidates such as K. Preethi of Cheruvannur were well into the 80s. The majority who appeared for the one-hour examination in subjects such as maths, Malayalam, English and social science were women too. The candidates comprised school dropouts, those in destitute and special homes besides the Marad prisoners in the jail and inmates of the leprosy hospital. Though the candidates were poor in the writing skills, their faculties were strong when it came to other abilities such as mathematical calculations and spoken language.
