FESTIVE LOOK: The Tagore Centenary Hall in Kozhikode where the European Union Film Festival got under way on Monday. - Photo: S. Ramesh Kurup
On May 4 in Berlin, Vier Minuten (Four Minutes) walked away with the prize for the best picture at the Lola Awards the German film industry's answer to the Oscars and 5,00,000 euros. The film, directed by Chris Kraus, was a surprise winner at the world's most lucrative film awards. Ten days later, film buffs of Kozhikode were fortunate to see this work when it was screened on the opening day of the European Union Film Festival at the Tagore Centenary Hall. `Four Minutes' is about an elderly woman who gives piano lessons at a women's prison where she comes across a violent young girl who is convicted of murder but is a music prodigy. Superb performances by Monica Bleibtreu, who plays the teacher, and Hannah Herzsprung, in the role of the pupil, make the film worth watching. It more than made up for the opening film, Do Not Disturb (Netherlands), which received a lukewarm response from the audience.
