Court stays proceedings against Shilpa

Legal Correspondent

Shilpa Shetty

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed all further proceedings pending against Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty in three criminal cases filed against her and Hollywood actor Richard Gere for a `kissing incident' at an April 15 meeting here.

A Bench consisting of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice R.V. Raveendran issued notice to the complainants.

In her petition seeking transfer of the cases to a Mumbai court, Ms. Shetty said that at the meeting, organised to create awareness among truck drivers of HIV/AIDS, Mr. Gere, while reliving a moment from his Hollywood movie Shall We Dance? (released in 2005), hugged and kissed her on the cheek. This was meant to be a spoof from the movie. Ms. Shetty said the private criminal complaints, in the magistrates' courts in Jaipur and Mundawar in Rajasthan and at Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, were filed only to make her run from pillar to post, and damage her career and reputation.
