Security sought for MLAs

Puducherry: A delegation of legislators from Puducherry and Karaikal regions, belonging to different political parties, called on Speaker R. Radhakrishnan on Tuesday to provide protection to them. R Viswanathan, MLA,(CPI) later told The Hindu that the delegation included members from the Congress the DMK, the PMK and the CPI besides the AIADMK, the MDMK, the PMC and Independents.

He said that a representation was made to the Speaker as instances of the legislators being assaulted were becoming a routine affair in the Union Territory since recently. He said that an Independent MLA J. Narayanasamy was assaulted at a funeral on Sunday in Villianoor by a group of persons.

The delegation also met Chief Minister N. Rangasamy later, and the Speaker was also present at the meeting.

NSA urged

The MLAs urged both the Speaker and the Chief Minister to take action under National Security Act against the culprits who had assaulted the legislator. Mr. Viswanathan said that the Speaker and the Chief Minister gave them a patient hearing and said that necessary follow-up action would be taken to protect the legislators.
