Kannada Sammelan in September

BANGALORE: The Government has decided to hold the three-day Vishwa Kannada Sammelan, as part of the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations, in Belgaum in September. The dates will be finalised shortly.

The Cabinet subcommittee on the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations met here on Tuesday and decided to launch all the remaining programmes planned during the State's golden jubilee year shortly. It also decided to provide an additional grant of Rs. 83 crore for the purpose.

Besides publication of books and other cultural programmes, Rangamandiras will be built in seven district headquarter cities and 47 more Gadi Bhavans will be constructed in border taluks. — Staff Reporter

`I did not abuse Vice-Chancellor'

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has refuted the charge made by some women's organisations that he abused Karnataka State Open University Vice-Chancellor K. Sudha Rao during his visit to the university in Mysore on May 6.

The Chief Minister told presspersons here on Tuesday that some women's organisations backed by Congress leaders had staged protests in Mysore alleging that he had abused Prof. Rao.

Mr. Kumaraswamy clarified that during his visit to the university he did not ask the Vice-Chancellor to regularise the services of temporary employees. He had only directed Prof. Rao to allow the employees to resume work. — Special Correspondent

`Civilian flights technically feasible'

Bidar: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has found that civil aviation operations are "technically feasible" at the Air Force base here. A team of consultants inspected the facilities on April 26 and found that the base may need an investment of Rs. 40 crore. The AAI has also asked the State Government to provide 150 acres of land.

Agriculture Minister Bandeppa Kashempur told presspersons here on Tuesday that land for the airport had been identified in the Kolar industrial area.

The Air Force cleared the proposal last year. The Union Defence Ministry has also approved it.

Officials' absence irks TP members

TUMKUR: Members of the Kunigal Taluk Panchayat on Tuesday decided to write to the Government about the absence of officials at the panchayat's general body meetings. Taluk panchayat president Leelavati said that officials of the departments of Public Works, Health, Irrigation and Forests were absent in the last five meetings. She asked the panchayat's executive officer Nage Gowda to write to the Government conveying the decision of the panchayat to take disciplinary action against the officials. — Staff Correspondent

Tension in Tiptur following clashes

TUMKUR: There was tension in Tiptur town in the district on Tuesday following a series of clashes between people of two communities. The police said cleaner of a lorry picked a quarrel with a man at a wayside canteen at Ganesh cinema. The man's supporters later attacked a few shops at Gandhinagar. The rival group retaliated at Nehru Nagar. Two persons were injured. Additional Superintendent of Police H.A. Anantharamu visited the spot. - Staff Correspondent.

Foundation stone laid for centre

TUMKUR: Swami Veereshananda of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Ashram here laid a foundation stone for the Veda Vyasa Vidya Kendra at Maralenahalli, on the outskirts of Tumkur, on Tuesday. Vipra Kalyana Nidhi Trust will establish the Vidya Kendra on a sprawling plot behind the Pooja Farm at the village (Maralenahalli). M.S. Venkatachala, president of the trust; C.V. `Satyagraha' centenary today

Sirsi: The Centenary of Mahatma Gandhi's "satyagraha", a non-violent movement against the British to gain Independence, will be celebrated at "Shetageri Kranti Maidan" at Ankola on May 16. Dalit youth banned

TUMKUR: People of "upper castes" at Kallughatta have allegedly banned Yogananda, a graduate Dalit youth from entering the village. The youth told presspersons here on Tuesday that he ventured to take water from a government borewell installed at Lingayats' colony. He said some Lingayat youths thrashed him and he lodged a complaint with the police. "But I withdrew it in view of the safety of my parents. The upper caste people asked me to leave the village after I withdrew the complaint," he said. - Staff Correspondent

`Free temple land'

TUMKUR: "Abhivriddhi" - a forum for development of Tumkur District, on Tuesday urged the Government to evict all encroachments on Gubbi Channabasaveshwara Temple premises. Forum president Kundaranahalli Ramesh told presspersons that 25 acres of the temple land was encroached upon by some influential people. He said the forum conducted a survey at the behest of the former Tumkur MP G.S. Basavaraju who wanted to undertake renovation of the temple. Mr. Ramesh said the government officials failed to act on several representations by the forum seeking eviction. - Staff Correspondent

348 nominations PANAJI: A total of 348 nominations have been filed by party candidates and independents for the 40 Assembly constituencies for the Goa Assembly elections scheduled on June 2.

On Tuesday, the last day of filing of nominations, as many as 179 nominations were filed, according to State election officials. Nominations will be scrutinised on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday will be the last day for withdrawal of nominations. — Special Correspondent

Supply of textbooks

Sirsi: Textbooks for schoolchildren will be supplied free of cost for 2007-08 from May 21, according to a release from the Block Education Officer's office on Tuesday.

Textbooks will be supplied to the headmasters at Banavasi region on May 21, on May 22 at Hulekal region, on May 23 at Sampkhand region, on May 24 at Bisalkoppa region and on May 26 at Sirsi Urban area, the release added. For details contact nodal officer G.K. Borkar on 9242943415.

Bypoll notification

DHARWAD: The Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad has issued the election notification for the bypoll to be held for election to two vacant posts of members of gram panchayats of Hebasur and Karadikoppa here on Tuesday. The last date for filing nominations in May 23 and the scrutiny will take place on May 24. The candidates have to withdraw their candidatures before May 26 and the bypoll if required would be held on June 3. The results will be declared on June 4, S.S.
