Gaza clashes intensify

Atul Aneja

DUBAI: Fighting in strife-torn Gaza has intensified with the killing of seven security personnel during clashes between the Palestinian groups loyal to Fatah and Hamas.

Seven Fatah personnel, loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas were killed when Hamas gunmen attacked them at the Karni crossing located at Gaza's border with Israel.

Israeli troops killed two Fatah men who had managed to escape.

The clash began after Hamas fighters targeted a jeep carrying members of the presidential guard linked to Fatah.

By afternoon on Tuesday, around 450 Fatah personnel trained for police duties in Egypt crossed the Egyptian border into Gaza. Fatah, however, said the group that had crossed did not intend to fight Hamas.

The recent surge in intra-Palestinian fighting has already killed 17 persons.

The continued violence, despite calls by Fatah and Hamas leaders for calm, has major implications.
