News Analysis
* The first sentence in "No giving up on gas" (Editorial, May 11, 2007) was: "Ever since India signed an agreement with the United States on civil nuclear cooperation in July 2005, busybodies in Washington have taken it upon themselves to dispense unwanted advice and guidance to New Delhi on the foreign policy front." A reader wanted to know whether it was a formal agreement as such, or just a statement or memo of understanding. The editorial writer clarifies that in diplomatic terms, a joint statement would have the same status as a "formal agreement".
* A sentence in a report "Voluntary retirement scheme for Indian crew" (May 11, 2007) was: "Such crew will receive the an additional month compensatory allowance ranging from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 50,000 per month." Indian Airlines Ltd. confirms the figures and clarifies that the sentence should have been: "Such cabin crew will receive the benefit of an additional monthly compensatory allowance ranging from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 50,000 per month within specified limits."
* In a report "Randhawa on a roll" ("Sport", May 12, 2007), on the the second day of the Rs. 65-lakh DLF Masters golf tournament at Gurgaon, the third paragraph stated that tour leader Ashok Kumar just about managed to make the cut that came at seven-under-151. It should have been seven-over-151.
* In "Online and Off Line" (May 14, 2007), a sentence was: "All forms of religions or casteist intolerance need to be reported and criticised. "Religions" should have been "religious". The error is regretted.
* A correction to a correction. The Guardian in its "Corrections and Clarifications" column (May 12, 2007) says: "A correction in this column on May 8, page 28, was wrong to dispute the inclusion of Sarah and Hannah in a list of names that end in vowels. Collins's first definition is a `voiced speech sound whose articulation is characterised by the absence of friction-causing obstruction in the vocal tract'. Apologies." The first correction appeared in these columns on May 11, 2007. The reference was to The Guardian article "What's in a name?, May 1, 2007 and which was reproduced in The Hindu, ("Newscape" page, April 30, 2007) as "It's all in the name, be aware of its power".
