`They are charging an exorbitant fee and demanding huge sums as donation'

ABVP says
  • Educational institutions were blatantly violating guidelines
  • Officials are not taking action against erring institutions

CALL FOR ACTION: ABVP members submitting a memorandum to an official seeking action against colleges charging exorbitant fee.

HUBLI: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat has threatened to launch a State-wide agitation if officials of the Education Department fail to take action against educational institutions fleecing students and their parents.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, the parishat State organising secretary N. Ravikumar said several educational institutions had fixed an exorbitant fee and demanded huge sums as donation for admission to pre-university courses.

Throughout the State educational institutions were blatantly violating guidelines issued by the State Government. However, the Primary and Secondary Education Minister and the Commissioner of Pre-university Education have remained mute spectators, he added.

According to a circular issued by the State Government, colleges are required to take only Rs. 15 for application forms.

However, many colleges were taking Rs. 100 to Rs. 500 for application forms, he said.

Mr. Ravikumar said although the Government fixed a fee of Rs. 1,215 for pre-university courses, the students were being asked to pay from around Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 20,000.

The donation demanded was in the tune of Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 1 lakh, he added. In spite of this, officials were reluctant to use the laws that were in force to punish such institutions, he said.

    Dharna

In the wake of continued negligence by officials and the Minister concerned, the parishat had decided to hold a dharna in front of the house of Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti in Hubli on Wednesday at 11 a.m., he said.

Mr. Ravikumar said the parishat had urged the State Government to formulate a Central Admission Policy for admission to pre-university courses, derecognising colleges that refused to bring down the fee.
